My Favorite Web Sites (and Find Out More About MOI :)

  • Cathie Beck/Cheap Cabernet: A Friendship's Official Website
On October 6, we're giving away thousands of dollars in FREE Bonus Gifts -- plus -- thousands in Contest Prizes -- including "Signature Cheap Cabernet" vino. L.A. clothing designers, "Girl Extraordinaire," Hay House Publishing and Balistreri Vineyards are all part of "Cheap Cabernet's" mega-launch. It's really about the parTAY (as you'll see).
  • Cathie Beck's "The Wine Wench" Column: Found at ColoradoBiz Magazine
Sign up for the weeklye A&E version of ColoradoBiz Magazine -- it's fun and informative -- you don't have to live in Colorado to enjoy it. It's also a VERY HELPFUL guide to "seeing" how Arts & Entertainment writing is evolving in the electronic media age.
  • A friend bugged me to get on Facebook and I thought: Yes -- I really need one more TIME SUCK thing in my day :). Then I got on. I've enjoyed reunions with old, old friends, found people I love whom I didn't know the whereabouts and simply de-stressed my mind communicating with the benign :). So there.
  • I've written for them for years -- and read Poets & Writers for many more. As a fledgling writer, this publication gave me some real insight into what, exactly, I needed to do to become better -- and to get published.
  • Here's a sight to help you (a) learn of new, literary and delicious books; and (b) help you find an independent book store in your neighborhood to buy them.

What I Like to Write About a/k/a Whomever Pays Moi

You know?

I made a decision about 20 years ago to support myself as a writer.

This turned out to mean that sometimes I wrote and submitted and all I got for payment was a copy of the publication.

Then I decided I wanted real, live checks and so began submitting to publications that paid.

In the meantime, I entered writing contests -- some of which I won.

And I went to college part-time (while working as a single mother of two) -- until they had to hand me two degrees 'cause I'd just been going so damn long.

Then I talked someone into a column writing gig, and then a newspaper staff gig and then a magazine editor gig.

In the meantime, I continued writing fiction and getting published.

And then I got paid for that.

You can too.

Believe me.

You can too.

I have just been introduced to this site. I have been trying to write a book , autobiagraphical , and I need advice. I have littl pieces of it that have been written over the years. I really do have a story to tell and I believe I would have to title it "Reawakening" I do have a Poem posted on this site. It is title Awaken and is included on a poem site . I am still trying to understand how to use this site and will work at doing so. Another author I admire on here is Charles Brietweiser. My life story identifies with his Inspirational endeavor. Please critique my poem "Awaken" I had it entered into a contest at Poetry.Com years ago when I was diagnozed with terminal cancer. So many miracles , not enough words to cover them all. Look forward to hearing from you. Diane

Hay House Publishing Recommends "Cheap Cabernet: A Friendship"

Kirkus Reviews:

"The author paints a searing portrait ... a promising memoir with rich material and sparse prose."

 ----------------------------

Former Rocky Mountain News Books Editor, Patti Thorn:

Cathie Beck's “Cheap Cabernet” is a vintage tale, a female buddy story chock full of the stuff of life: tears, laughter and love in the darkest of times. You won’t put it down until the final page -- at which time a box of Kleenex and a glass of cabernet, cheap or otherwise, would be wise to have on hand: the first to deal with the story's denouement, the second to toast Beck's triumph.

Cheap Cabernet is simply awesome, such a poignant story, and so very well-written.

Susan Gatschet-Reese, KUVO Radio, Host, Mid-Morning Jazz

I stayed up till 1:20 a.m. to finish this book ...

It is beautifully written and I could not put it down. I decided to paint my kitchen last weekend but once I started reading "Cheap Cabernet," I found all kinds of excuses to take extended breaks to read a few pages and then get back to the task at hand.  Needless to say I am not finished with the kitchen but had to finish Cheap Cabernet last night.  ...  what an adventure, what a life!

Cathie Beck is a very talented writer and this book will be read by many people. "Cheap Cabernet" will become a favorite of book club and stimulate some wonderful conversation about friendship, surviving the rough times and enjoying the hell out of the good times.

-------------------------------

Elle Newmark, best-selling author, "The Book of Unholy Mischief"

"Beyond wonderful -- wickedly funny, poignant, and smart.

Anyone who's a fan of Mary Karr or Annie Lamott will find Cathie Beck's "Cheap Cabernet" both laugh-out-loud hysterical -- and heartbreaking."
